This isn’t what EM Forster intendedThere are beautiful people kissingleaning on cars in dusky 1988 parking lots, and beautiful people hanging out ofitalian windows are laughing at me.Beautiful people represent somethingthat I think I would have believed inhanging from those windows leaningon those cars if I myself were beautiful.Beautiful people never have to shavetheir hairy legs and armpits or worryabout clipping fingernails evenly andfiling away the rough snagging edges.Beautiful people can never truly get dirty. It’s said their skin is so beautiful thateverything seems intentional even filthand only accidents are dirty.Only beautiful people are allowedto say beautiful profound things andonly then because things are mademore beautiful by the act of being said. When beautiful people lean over thesides of boats to kiss on the neckthe water always settles just so fineon eyelashes like little salted diamonds.
