National Poetry Month : Amanda Earl,

Pleasures #1

inspired by the Pleasures Intensive Workshop
given by Jeannine Ouellette in Writing in the Dark, April 2025.

Give me a long poem written over forty-eight hours
while listening to Nine Inch Nails, the earthy scent
of incense burning on the ledge of the window,
while rain pours down.

Give me my sixty-one year old body,
holding a plank for sixty-seconds.
All this wild in bloom and springing
to life when I have merely decades left.

A man calls me lioness as I sit on his lap
at my local Oak, teach him how
to pleasure me with featherlight licks
of my tongue over his lips.

Give me my husband’s omelets:
heat of jalapeno, candied bacon, onions
and mushrooms drenched in wine,
crunch of green onion, salty cheddar oozing out.

Give me this raw, stubborn ache to stay alive.
Give me a chance to give Death the finger one more time,
as I refuse yet again, to take the Grim Reaper’s hand.
