National Poetry Month : Scott Inniss,

Drum Circularity

Foundationalism claims for its rhythm

a priori while lovers pulse their story.

Crucial the volleys of mensural

truth or encounter. So long of tooth,

considered dead shots, spare skin abettors—

method only means what head-to-heads

define as a stand up or supine

war. But metaphysics is a bore.

Head’s a resonator but “I think” a lead

motion. Leading doers drum poison

baseballs up against such funeral squall.

Hand and heart form a reverberating band.

Agreement marching between a straight and bent

rebound sounds the depths. Fair weather kings crowned.

Stroke by stroke the lash and guillotine joke.

Tap tap tap the misplaced baseball bats.

Hand’s a first principal—a tool, a wand.

Works as a theory of knowing in which lurks

conflation of absolute and relation.

Been, is, and was as this erotic dream.
