National Poetry Month : Leesa Dean,

Leesa Dean is the author of two books (Waiting for the Cyclone, The Filling Station) and two chapbooks (The Desert of Itabira, Apogee/Perigee). Her third book, Interstitial, will be published by Gaspereau Press in Spring 2026. The poem "Hiding the Brace Key" is part of a series of poems that explore Dean's mother's life and struggles as a polio survivor who lived in a metal brace for years before undergoing an invasive, experimental surgery that left her in a body cast for nine months. Dean is a graduate of the University of Guelph's MFA program and teaches creative writing at Selkirk College in Castlegar, BC where she also helps run the Black Bear Review. She lives in Krestova, BC, with her artist husband Matty Kakes, their daughter Scarlett Heart, and a wild bush cat named Tuba.
