National Poetry Month : Jason Heroux,

A Page from Novica Tadic’s Notebook

Turn around, and ask: why doesn’t the sawdust believe in the saw? Night chases day. Fruit follows seed. Let the thread worship its needle. Let the tap water be dragged back to rain. Into an apple, onto a hook, out of the earth, worm your way, worm your way. See that little dark cloud high in the sky pretending to snow? That’ll be me one day. The ones born with sleeves spend their lives looking for those born with arms, and the headless king carries his gold crown in his hands, ashamed. Blind wind, drive the rain safely home. Tell us, dust, how to greet the broom when it sweeps.

Jason Heroux was the Poet Laureate for the City of Kingston, Ontario from 2019 to 2022, where he lives. He is the author of the prose poem collection Like a Trophy from the Sun (Guernica Editions, 2024) and the chapbook, A Further Introduction to Bingo, co-written with Dag T. Straumsvåg (above/ground press, 2024).
